The Best Washable Rugs for Homes With Dogs
Eight machine-washable rugs from Rugs USA and Ruggable that can handle muddy paws, shedding, and the occasional accident, with the pile height, material, and washing limits of each.

Save to Pinterest It’s 7am, it rained overnight, and the back door opens. Four wet paws hit the hardwood, do two fast laps of the living room, and then settle, with a very satisfied sigh, in the exact center of the rug.
If you live with a dog, you already know whose rug it is. You bought it, you picked the color, and you vacuum it, but the dog has been living on it since the day it was unrolled. That makes you the landlord. And like any landlord, you get to decide how much wear and tear you’re willing to tolerate before the security deposit becomes a problem.
A washable rug changes the terms of the lease. Muddy prints, a hairball, the accident that happened while everyone was at work: all of it goes in the washer instead of turning into a permanent stain you learn to place a chair over.
Every rug below was listed at Rugs USA or Ruggable when we checked prices on October 4, 2026. We stuck to 5x7 and 5x8 sizes on purpose, because a washable rug only helps if it fits in your machine.
What a dog actually does to a rug
Before the picks, it helps to picture what your tenant gets up to in a normal week.
Nails catch on loops. Dogs dig, circle, and scratch before lying down. A low, cut pile or a flatweave gives nails less to snag. Most of the Rugs USA picks here are around a tenth of an inch thick, which is about as flat as a rug gets.
Hair settles into pile. The plusher the rug, the more fur it holds onto between vacuums. A soft rug is lovely under a sleeping dog, and it’s also a commitment to more vacuuming. We’d only pick a plush one for a dog that doesn’t shed much.
Spills soak in fast. Some washable rugs add a performance coating or a waterproof barrier, which buys you a few minutes before a puddle reaches the floor underneath. That matters for the accident you find an hour later.
Size decides whether it’s actually washable. A 5x7 rug is heavy when it’s wet. Rugs USA lists a minimum washer size on its spill-proof listings, and Ruggable says some of its larger sizes are better off at a laundromat. Check the listing against your machine before you count on doing laundry at home.
The 8 rugs
1. Rugs USA Keyara Spill Proof Washable Rug, $99
Picture the spot right inside the back door, where every walk ends. That’s where we’d put the Keyara. It’s 100% polyester with a performance fabric and coating that Rugs USA says repels spills and stains, and the pile is a low 0.10 inches, so paws and nails glide across it instead of digging in. The stone color is muddy-paw adjacent, which is the point. At $99 for a 5x7, it’s the one we’d buy first.
2. Rugs USA Bayberry Spill Proof Vintage Washable Rug, $99
If you want a rug that looks like it came from an estate sale and can still go through the wash, this is the one. Bayberry has a faded, Persian-inspired pattern, and a busy vintage design is one of the best places to hide a stray tuft of fur. It’s the same 0.10-inch polyester as the Keyara, made in Egypt, with one-piece construction that Rugs USA describes as easy to lay down, lift up, and clean.
3. Rugs USA Meena Fading Garden Spill Proof Washable Rug, $99
The Meena is the softer, prettier option in the same spill-proof family, with a faded floral pattern in beige. We’d picture it in a dining room, under a table where crumbs fall and a dog waits patiently for more of them. It shares the low 0.10-inch polyester build and the stain-resistant coating, and it’s the same $99 for a 5x7.
4. Rugs USA Malta Machine Washable Rug, $218
Malta is all subtle stripes in grey, the kind of quiet rug that lets the rest of the room talk. Rugs USA says it lies flat and stays soft with no shedding or pilling, even after multiple washes, which is exactly the claim you want from a rug that will see the inside of a washer a lot. It’s woven, printed polyester at 0.15 inches. Note the size is 5x8, a bit longer than the others, and the price reflects it.
5. Rugs USA Cranbury Plush Textured Washable Rug, $209
This is the exception to the low-pile rule. Cranbury has a 0.55-inch, high-density pile made from recycled yarn, with a subtle textured pattern, and it’s still machine-washable. Picture it in a bedroom where an older dog sleeps beside the bed and wants something soft on the way down. You’ll vacuum it more often than the flat ones (that’s the rent for the comfort), and we’d skip it for a heavy shedder.
6. Ruggable Kamran Hazel Flatwoven Rug, $239
Ruggable is the name most people already associate with washable rugs, and its original two-piece system is the one we’d look at for a dog. A thin cover attaches to a nonslip pad, and only the cover goes in the washer. The flatwoven cover is 2mm thick, 100% polyester with a built-in waterproof barrier, and Ruggable says all sizes of this version are home machine-washable. The Kamran pattern is a distressed, Heriz-style medallion in browns, honey, and cream, which is about as forgiving a palette as a muddy dog could ask for. The $239 price is for the 5x7 rug and pad together.
7. Ruggable Impasto Taupe Tufted All-in-One Rug, $349
Ruggable’s tufted version is a single piece, about 7mm thick, with a built-in nonslip backing and a waterproof barrier. It’s softer underfoot than the flatwoven system, and Ruggable says it’s home machine-washable up to 8x10. The Impasto pattern looks like thick paint on canvas in taupe, cream, and grey, and an abstract like that is a good disguise for the everyday scuffs a dog leaves behind. It had more than 3,300 reviews averaging 4.5 stars when we checked. One catch: it can’t be used with a separate rug pad.
8. Ruggable Haven Natural Performance Weave Rug, $359
If you love the look of jute and live with a dog, real jute is a tough tenant to keep (it holds stains and can’t take a soak). The Haven is Ruggable’s jute-inspired Performance Weave, a one-piece rug with a high-low texture in warm, flecked neutrals. It’s rated for indoor and outdoor use, UV-resistant, and machine-washable cold. Ruggable recommends a laundromat for the 8x10 and low suction when you vacuum, so the 5x7 is the size we’d stick with.
Which one we’d pick
If we were furnishing a first apartment with a young dog who hasn’t learned to wipe his feet (none of them have), we’d start with the Keyara. It’s $99, it’s nearly flat, and it’s coated for the mess. For a living room where the rug has to look like a grown-up chose it, the Ruggable Kamran is the one we’d stretch for, because the two-piece system means you only ever wash the thin part.
Picture the next rainy morning: the back door opens, the paws hit the floor, the laps happen, and the rug goes in the wash before lunch. Your tenant still gets the best spot in the house, and you get to stop worrying about the deposit.
