It’s a Sunday in early January, and the tree is still up. It has been “coming down this weekend” for two weekends now. The ornaments could honestly stay up another week. The trouble is everything they go back into: the tree’s cardboard box split down one side last year, the lights are going to come off in one long knot, and the only empty floor is the one you’re standing on.

Taking down Christmas in a small home is a stage crew striking the set after the last show. Everything has to come down in one night, and all of it has to fit in the wings: the closet, the gap under the bed, the top shelf nobody can reach without a chair. Then it waits there for eleven months until opening night, when it all needs to come back out in the right order and in one piece.

These are the Christmas decoration storage ideas we’d use to make that strike go faster in a small space. All eight were live listings on Amazon when we checked on November 2, 2026, and Amazon shows the current prices on each one.

Measure the wings first

Before buying anything, find out where the set will live. Three numbers decide almost everything:

  1. The height under your bed, from the floor to the lowest rail or slat. The flat picks below need 7 to 9 inches.
  2. The tallest clear corner in your closet, floor to shelf, if you want to store the tree standing up.
  3. The depth of your top closet shelf (front to back, past the door frame), because the ornament box and wreath bag want to sit there.

Pack in cue order. Whatever goes up first in December (the tree, then the lights) should be the easiest thing to reach.

The tree

The tree is the lead, and in a small home it’s also the biggest piece of scenery you own. There are two ways to store it: take it apart and pack it flat, or leave it assembled and zip a cover over it.

1. BALEINE 7.5 ft Christmas Tree Storage Bag

If your tree comes apart in sections and you have a closet floor or the space behind the couch, this is the bag we’d start with. It’s 50 by 16 by 20 inches in 900D Oxford fabric, sized for a disassembled tree up to 7.5 feet, with reinforced handles and two zippers so the opening runs wide. BALEINE lists a load capacity of 50 pounds.

Picture it in a hall closet on its side, under the coats, with the tree’s stand tucked in at one end. It replaces the split cardboard box with something you can carry by the handles, and when the tree is up in December the empty bag folds down to almost nothing.

2. Elf Stor Upright Christmas Tree Storage Bag

This is the one for anyone who dreads fluffing every branch again next year. Instead of taking the tree apart, you slide this cover down over the assembled tree, cinch it at the bottom and buckle the straps, then stand the whole thing in a closet corner. It’s 600D Oxford canvas, 35 inches wide and 75 inches tall unfolded, made for an assembled tree up to 7.5 feet, with a zipper that runs the full length.

The catch is honest and big: you need a corner that can hold a whole tree standing up. We’re not sure how many apartment closets have one. If yours does, this pick saves the most time in January. If it doesn’t, the flat bag above is the better fit, and there’s no shame in it.

The ornaments

Ornaments are the props, small and breakable, and the ones you’d be saddest to find in pieces. They want their own slots and a spot where nothing heavy lands on them.

3. 612 Vermont Flat Under Bed Ornament Storage

Under the bed is the space under the stage, dark and low and mostly wasted. This box is 8 inches tall, 41 inches long and 20 inches wide, so it slides under a bed with about 9 inches of clearance. Inside, six trays with removable dividers hold 72 three-inch ornaments and 36 four-inch ones, and 612 Vermont lists the materials as acid-free, so they shouldn’t discolor ornaments as they age. The shell is polyester, with a handle on each side.

If we were storing a lot of ornaments in a small bedroom with the clearance, this is the one we’d pick. It takes the most fragile thing you own and puts it somewhere nobody walks.

4. SONGMICS Large Christmas Ornament Storage Box

If there’s no room under the bed, send the ornaments up to the shelf instead. This box is 25.4 by 13.2 by 13.4 inches in polypropylene plastic, with eight trays and modular dividers for up to 128 balls. The walls are semi-transparent, so you can see the red and gold through them without unzipping. SONGMICS caps the load at 11 pounds, which is plenty for glass balls and a reason to keep the heavy figurines somewhere else.

Picture it on the top shelf of a bedroom closet, with the trays lifting out one at a time next December like a drawer of stage jewelry.

Wreaths, garland and lights

These are the pieces that get crushed or tangled, usually because they got shoved into whatever box had room.

5. Whitmor Clear Wreath Storage Container

A wreath stored under heavier things comes out the next year with one flat side. This round bag is 30 inches across and 8 inches deep, in tear-resistant clear plastic with a zipper and handles, and Whitmor says it stacks. The clear walls mean you know which wreath is inside without opening it.

We’d lay it flat on top of the ornament box on the shelf, or slide it in behind the hanging clothes, standing on its edge. It’s the smallest decision on this list and probably the one you’ll be gladdest you made.

6. Wenqik Hanging Garland Storage Bag

Garland is the scenery that hates boxes the most. This set uses the closet rod instead: a 15.7-inch wooden hanger with 12 hooks, six on each side, inside a clear bag about 43 by 23 inches and 6 inches deep. The garland hangs from the hooks, so nothing presses down on it, and it takes up about the same rod space as a winter coat.

It’s a newer listing, so check the hanger and the zipper when it arrives. The idea is the right one for a small closet, though, because the rod is space you already have.

7. SEWANTA Christmas Light Storage Holders, Set of 8

Every strand of lights gets untangled in December by a more patient person than the one who packed it in January. These eight plastic holders are for the January person. Each one has a handle to wind with and hooks to hold the plug ends, and SEWANTA says each holds up to 200 mini lights or 100 feet of extension cord. No knot to pick apart next year, in theory.

Picture one strand per holder, wound as it comes off the tree, then all eight stacked in the bottom of the tree bag or a tote. Next year the first strand comes off the reel straight, and it’s lit before you’ve found the step stool.

The soft stuff

8. Amazon Basics Under Bed Storage Bags, 2-Pack

The tree skirt, the stockings, the throw pillow covers and the table runner are the costumes, and they fold. These two fabric bags are 18 by 42 by 6 inches each, with a zipper, a clear vinyl window on top and loop handles on the ends, and they fold flat when they’re empty. At 6 inches tall they need about 7 inches of clearance, so they fit under beds the ornament box can’t.

Picture one bag for the stockings and the tree skirt and one for everything that goes on the table, with the window facing up so you can read it without pulling it out. In December the decorations come out and the bags hold the everyday throw pillows you swapped out.

Where we’d start

For most small apartments, we’d start with three things: the flat tree bag, the under-bed ornament box if the bed has the clearance (the SONGMICS box on the shelf if it doesn’t), and the light holders. That covers the biggest piece, the most fragile pieces and the ones most likely to knot. The wreath bag and the hanging garland bag come next, depending on what you’ve got.

We’d love to tell you the right bags make taking down the tree fun, but we’ve read a lot of listings and none of them promise that. The strike will still take an evening. The difference shows up next December, when the tree comes out of a bag instead of a split box, the lights come off their reels in a straight line, and opening night starts on time.
