A sunny high-rise living room with a teal sofa piled with cushions and a gray throw, a palm and a globe floor lamp, a round side table on a jute rug, and an open suitcase on the floor by the city windows. Save to Pinterest

The text comes in on a Tuesday: they’ve booked the flight, they land the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and they’re staying through Sunday. You look at the apartment. There’s the couch, the bed, and a rug in front of the TV. Somebody is about to sleep on one of those, and you’d like it not to be the rug.

A small apartment hosting guests is a pop-up shop. For a few days it has to be something it isn’t the rest of the year, and when the visit ends it has to fold back into itself with nothing left in the way. The best guest bed is the one that sets up fast, sleeps well for a few nights, and disappears into a closet when everyone’s gone home.

Every pick below was a live listing on Amazon when we checked on October 30, 2026. Before you buy, measure the floor where the bed will go and the closet or under-bed space where it’ll live afterward.

Air mattresses

1. SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised Queen Air Mattress

If we were hosting two adults for a long weekend, this is where we’d start. It’s a raised queen, 80 by 60 inches and 19 inches tall in two chambers, which makes getting in and out of it feel more like a bed than a camping pad. SoundAsleep says 40 internal air coils keep it flat and stable, and a built-in pump fills it in under four minutes. SoundAsleep calls the flocked top waterproof and says it helps the sheets stay put. It comes with a carry bag and a one-year warranty.

2. INTEX Comfort Plush Queen Air Mattress

For a guest who’d rather not climb up from the floor, this is the tallest of the air beds, 22 inches high and close to a real mattress on a frame. INTEX describes a dual-layer air pocket system with a velvety top and sides, and its built-in electric pump fills it in about 4.75 minutes. The listing also warns that the material stretches on the first inflation and may need topping up, so set it up the night before the guests arrive and add air in the morning. It comes with a carry bag and a repair patch.

3. INTEX Pillow Rest Queen Air Mattress

For a single guest, or a room where a 22-inch bed would loom, this lower one sits at 16.5 inches with a built-in pillow at the head. The built-in pump fills it in about 3.25 minutes, and INTEX lists it at 12.9 pounds, against 19.4 for the Comfort Plush, so it’s the easier of the two to carry back to the closet. Picture it on the living room floor for a teenager who’ll be asleep by midnight and up for breakfast.

Beds that fold

4. EconoHome Folding Bed with Memory Foam Mattress

If you host more than once a year, a folding bed skips the inflating altogether. This one is a 75 by 38 inch twin frame of steel wire lattice with a 5-inch memory foam mattress, and EconoHome lists it for up to 300 pounds. Folded, it’s 14 inches thick and rolls on four wheels into a wardrobe or under a bed, the fixture you wheel out of the stockroom when the pop-up opens. It needs assembly the first time, in seven steps with the tools included, and EconoHome suggests two people for the setup.

5. MLILY Twin Trifold Mattress

If you’d rather skip the pump and the frame, this one is simply foam. It’s a twin-size, 4-inch trifold with 1.5 inches of gel memory foam over 2.5 inches of support foam, and it folds into a thick cushion that can sit in the corner as extra seating the rest of the year. On a hard floor we’d put a rug under it. MLILY lists a three-year warranty.

6. Serta Rane Futon Sofa Bed

If you’d rather the guest bed earn its floor space all year, this is the one. It’s a 66.1-inch tufted futon on chrome legs that seats three as a couch and folds flat into what Serta calls a twin-size bed. Serta lists a solid hardwood frame, high-density foam and a 450-pound weight limit. It’s a couch first, so it suits a guest who’s staying a night or two, and a living room that needs a second seat anyway.

Make it feel like a bed

7. Moonsea Air Mattress Sheet Set

Regular queen sheets tend to pop off a tall air mattress. This set has a fitted sheet with a 16- to 24-inch deep pocket made to fit an air bed, plus two pillow protectors. A small pocket on the side holds a phone or glasses within reach. It’s brushed microfiber and doesn’t include a flat sheet, so add one from the linen closet and a real pillow from your own bed.

Where we’d start

For most small apartments hosting once or twice a year, we’d buy the SoundAsleep queen and the Moonsea sheets, and keep a spare pillow and a lamp ready for the room it lands in. If you host every holiday, the folding bed saves the inflating every time. And if the living room needs a second seat anyway, the futon does both jobs.

Then picture Sunday afternoon. The guests are on their way to the airport, the bed is deflated and back in its bag, and the pop-up shop is an apartment again by dinner.
