Guest Room Refresh Before the Holidays
A guest room refresh in eight pieces before holiday visitors arrive, with organic cotton percale sheets, a pre-washed cotton quilt, fresh pillows, a towel set, a luggage rack, a bedside carafe, a cedarwood candle and a washable rug, and how to set them up like a small hotel.

Save to Pinterest Every guest room has a second job the other eleven months of the year. It’s the room with the treadmill, the folded laundry, the boxes from the last move that never got unpacked, and a bed under a pile of coats. Then someone books a flight for the holidays, and the room has about six weeks to remember what it was for.
The goal is a small hotel. Picture the best hotel room you’ve ever walked into after a long trip: crisp sheets, a towel folded on the bed, somewhere to set the suitcase, a glass of water within reach, a lamp you can turn off without getting up. Hotels are good at it because they think about the guest’s first ten minutes in the room, and a guest room at home rarely gets that attention.
Every item below was a live listing on Amazon when we checked on October 30, 2026. There are eight of them, in the order a guest meets them.
The bed: what the guest sleeps in
The bed is the room’s whole reason for existing, so most of the attention goes here. Start with the sheets, because a guest bed’s sheets are usually whatever was left over when the main bedroom got new ones.
California Design Den’s Organic Cotton Percale Sheet Set is 100% organic cotton, GOTS certified, in a percale weave the listing compares to a freshly pressed dress shirt: crisp, cool and matte, with no sheen. That’s the classic hotel sheet, and a good choice for guests who might run hot in an unfamiliar bed. Guest beds are often fulls, and this full set has an 84 by 96 inch flat sheet, a deep-pocket fitted sheet and two pillowcases. Bright white is the hotel color, and it tells a guest the bed was made for them.
Guest pillows are often the flattest in the house. Beckham Hotel Collection’s Bed Pillows come two to a set, 20 by 28 inches with an 8-inch loft, filled with down alternative in a 100% cotton cover. The listing calls the feel medium-firm, for side and back sleepers, and they wash on a gentle cycle and air dry between visits. This is the upgrade a guest will actually feel.
On top, WDCOZY’s Pre-Washed Cotton Quilt in beige is 100% cotton gauze with a cotton fill, held in place with diamond stitching. It’s lightweight, the kind of layer that works in a cool December room without being stifling. It comes as a 90 by 96 inch queen quilt with two pillow shams, which hangs generously over a full bed. It’s machine washable and tumble dries low. The pre-washed finish has a soft, slightly lived-in look, so nobody needs to iron it before the guests arrive. Beige sits easily over white sheets and hides the stray coffee drip.
The bathroom shelf: what the guest washes with
Hotels leave towels on the bed for a reason: it tells the guest these are theirs and they don’t have to ask. Amazon Basics’ 6-Piece Cotton Towel Set in gray has two 30 by 54 inch bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths in 100% cotton with a simple pique border. Six pieces covers a couple for a long weekend. Fold a bath towel, a hand towel and a washcloth into a stack at the foot of the bed for each guest, and keep them separate from the household’s towels all year.
The hotel touches: what the guest notices
These are the pieces that make a guest say “oh, this is nice” when they first walk in.
A suitcase on the floor means a guest crouching to dig through it for a week. Casual Home’s Extra-Wide Luggage Rack is solid wood in espresso with reinforced straps, nearly 30 inches wide across the top, room for a big checked bag, and about 19 inches tall, which is high enough to pack without bending. It needs no assembly. Unfold it at the foot of the bed when guests arrive, and fold it into the closet when they leave. This is the most hotel-like thing in the whole list, and if we could buy only one piece for a guest room, it’s the one we’d start with.
Waking up thirsty in a strange house means a dark walk to an unfamiliar kitchen. ZILJJ’s Bedside Water Carafe and Glass Set is a 30-ounce borosilicate glass carafe with a tumbler that doubles as its lid, made for exactly this: a nightstand refill. Fill it before the guests get in, set it on the nightstand, and they never have to go looking.
A hotel room smells like nothing in particular, and a guest room that’s been closed up since spring smells like dust and the treadmill. Gorfex’s Cedarwood Amber Candle is 11 ounces of a soy and beeswax blend in an orange embossed glass jar, with a wooden wick and up to 60 hours of burn time. The scent blends cedarwood, amber, sandalwood and vanilla. Light it for an hour before the guests arrive and blow it out, so the room smells warm and lived-in by the time the suitcases come up the stairs.
The floor: what the guest steps on first
The first step out of bed on a December morning shouldn’t land on cold hardwood. Soalmost’s Washable Faded Area Rug in beige comes in 5’ x 8’, big enough to sit half under a full or queen bed with room to step onto on one side. It’s a low 0.24-inch polyester pile in a faded geometric pattern on a nonslip TPR backing, and it goes in the washing machine on cold between visits. The faded pattern also forgives muddy socks from a December walk.
Putting it together
Make the bed with the percale sheets and both new pillows, and lay the quilt folded across the bottom third so it looks like a hotel turndown. Stack the towels on top. Set the carafe on the nightstand next to whatever lamp already lives there, light the candle for an hour, unfold the luggage rack against the wall, and slide the rug half under the bed.
If the room has to go back to being the treadmill room in January, almost everything here packs away flat: the rack folds, the rug rolls, and the sheets and towels go in a bin labeled “guests.” Next year, setup takes twenty minutes.
Then picture the knock on the guest room door the first morning, and a guest who slept well enough to say so without being asked. That’s the only review that counts.
