You signed the lease for the light, or the location, or because it was the third place you saw that weekend and you were tired. Now it’s six months later and the living room still looks like the listing photos: beige walls, one ceiling fixture, blinds that came with the place, and a vague feeling that you’re a guest in your own home.

A rental is a rented suit. You can’t take in the seams or move the buttons, because the landlord owns the fabric. Everything worn with the suit is yours, though: the tie, the pocket square, the shoes. Those are the pieces that make people stop noticing it’s a rental.

Every upgrade below costs under $100 on its own, and each one comes off or packs up when you move. All twelve were live listings on Amazon and Rugs USA on October 4, 2026, at the prices shown. We noted what each one asks of your walls, because “renter-friendly” only counts if you get your deposit back.

1. Give one wall a pattern

One patterned wall changes a room more than anything else on this list, and peel-and-stick vinyl means you can take it down later. This neutral striped peel-and-stick wallpaper has wide beige-gray and white stripes, and each roll covers about 14 square feet according to the listing. An accent wall behind a sofa usually takes several rolls, so measure first, and buy them all at once so the color matches.

The listing says not to use it on textured walls, which rules out a lot of rentals. Test a corner before committing, since any adhesive can lift cheap paint when it comes off.

2. Put a lamp where the overhead used to be

Picture coming home at night and switching on a lamp instead of the ceiling light. The Nourison Home 20-inch ceramic table lamp in Sand is a warm, light beige with a fabric shade. It stands 20 inches tall with a 14-inch shade, sized for an end table or console. It has a 60-inch clear cord with an on/off switch, and it takes one E26 bulb up to 60 watts.

3. Add a sconce without an electrician

A plug-in sconce gets light up on the wall without opening it. The CADUKE swing arm sconces come as a pair with linen shades and black metal backplates, and the heads adjust 270 degrees. They plug into an outlet, or hardwire if you ever own the wall. Mounting takes a couple of screws through the backplate, which leaves two small holes that are easy to patch. We’d hang one on each side of the sofa.

4. Swap every bulb to warm white

This is the cheapest upgrade here and the one you’d notice first. Most rentals come with whatever bulbs were cheapest, and a mix of cool and warm bulbs makes a room look patchy. The Amazon Basics A19 LED six-pack is 2700K soft white, dimmable, and uses 9 watts for the light of a 60-watt bulb. That’s $9.96 for six.

5. Lay down a rug you can wash

A rug makes a rental’s floor feel like yours, and if the floor is cold laminate, your feet notice too. The Bayberry Spill Proof Vintage Washable Rug in Sand from Rugs USA is $99 in the 5’ x 7’ size. It’s 100% polyester, power loomed, with a 0.10-inch low pile, made in Egypt and OEKO-TEX certified. It’s one piece, so it goes straight in the washer (Rugs USA lists a 2.2 cubic foot minimum).

A 5x7 works in front of a loveseat or in a small living room. Under a full-size sofa it’ll look small, so try to get at least the front legs onto it.

6. Hang real curtains

Blinds that came with the place are the rental equivalent of a clip-on tie. A pair of linen panels softens the window and the whole wall. The MIULEE linen curtains come as two 52 by 84 inch panels for $16.11. They’re 30% linen and 70% polyester, semi-sheer, with both a rod pocket and back tabs, and you can machine wash them cold.

7. Hang them without drilling

Curtain rod brackets usually need screws. Command Curtain Rod Hooks stick to painted walls instead, and 3M says they come off clean. You get two hooks and four strips. They hold rods 0.5 to 0.75 inches in diameter and up to 48 inches long, up to 10 pounds total. That covers a light pair of panels on a modest window. For a wide window or heavy blackout drapes, brackets with screws are the honest answer, and small screw holes patch easily.

Mount the hooks a few inches above the window frame instead of right at it, as long as the 84-inch panels still reach where you want them to. Curtains that start higher make the window, and the room, look taller.

8. Change the pillows, not the sofa

The sofa might be a hand-me-down you can’t replace this year. New pillow covers are the pocket square, the small thing that changes the whole outfit. The MIULEE chenille pillow covers are a two-pack of 18-inch squares in a neutral beige with a textured chenille weave and hidden zippers. They’re covers only, so you’d reuse your inserts, and they machine wash cold.

9. Drape a throw over the arm

Picture a cold night with the heat set low, because the heating bill is yours, and a chunky knit throw within reach. The L’AGRATY chunky knit throw in ivory is 50 by 60 inches of chenille yarn in a cable knit. Folded over the sofa arm, it adds texture even when nobody’s using it.

10. Lean a big mirror

A floor mirror bounces window light around a dim room and makes a small one feel bigger. It doesn’t need a single hole, because it leans. This 56 by 16 inch arched floor mirror has a black aluminum frame and a built-in stand, so it can lean against a wall or stand on its own. The listing says the glass is shatterproof with an explosion-proof backing film, which is reassuring for something that leans. Put it across from a window to bounce the most light.

11. Fill the empty corner with a tree

Every rental has a corner where nothing quite fits. A tall plant fills it, and a faux one survives the north-facing window and the long weekend away. The Realead 6-foot artificial olive tree comes in a 10-inch planter, and the wire branches bend so you can shape it. It’s 72 inches tall and about 38 inches wide at its fullest, so it needs real floor space. At $99.99 it’s the priciest upgrade here, a penny under the line.

12. Hang art without nails

Bare walls are what make a rental look like a rental. Command Picture Hanging Strips come in a 16-pair assortment: 8 pairs of large strips rated for 15 pounds and 8 pairs of medium strips rated for 10. Per the listing, clean the wall with rubbing alcohol first, wait seven days after fresh paint, and don’t use them over a bed or on wallpaper. At move-out, you pull the tab straight down, slowly.

Where we’d start

If we only had $100 for a rental living room, we’d buy the bulbs, the curtains, the Command hooks, the pillow covers, the throw, and the picture strips. That’s $96.31 before tax, and it changes the light, the window, the sofa, and the walls in one weekend. The rug, the lamp, and the tree can come next month.

None of it changes the suit. You’d still hand it back at the end of the lease, but for as long as you’re wearing it, it’ll fit like it was made for you.
